Meet the man behind Le Wine Chambre: Walter Melato

Posted on

We call him our Chief Wine Officer, but really, Walter Melato is so much more than that!

He’s the visionary behind Le Wine Chambre and the dynamic driving force behind our hospitality.

An engineer by profession, Walter’s dream of opening a wine bar finally came true in 2017 after spending over 25 years in the building environment.

If you’ve ever been curious about how Le Wine Chambre came into being, here’s a short interview with the man behind the dream:

1. What first sparked your interest in wine?

My interest in wine was sparked – amongst other things – by the sophistication of wine-making.

Secondly, the story behind every bottle and how the same bottle of wine can taste different depending on temperature, mood, food and the company you enjoying the vino with, just fascinates me!

2. Can you tell us the story behind the name of Le Wine Chambre?

My daughter studied French at high school. So whilst brainstorming ideas that will resonate with my vision, she suggested Le Wine Chambre.

Because she understood my philosophy about having a feeling of homeliness and familiarity in the wine bar, we decided it would be a good fit! So having a link with home is important to me.

Bringing wine and soccer together at the Soweto Derby with guest somelier Patson Mathonsi.

3. What is your vision for Le Wine Chambre?

I’d like to help remove ‘snobbishness’ from wine drinking.

And also create an environment where people can be themselves without feeling judged.

Lastly, I want to create a sophisticated, yet welcoming home away from home for wine-lovers.

4. Do you have a favourite local wine? What is it? Why do you love it? International?

Vilafonte Series C is my favourite local wine. It’s a sophisticated wine, but can be appreciated and enjoyed by anyone.

My favourite international wine is the Nautilus Estate Malborough Pinot Noir (New Zealand). This is a wine that can best be described as a thorough Pinot Noir. Best enjoyed with good food without having to worry about whether it pairs well with red meat or fish.

5. Who would be your dream guest to entertain at Le Wine Chambre?

Al Pacino!

Why don’t you have a pop-up in Zimbali a few times a year? Would be great to see you down here again.
